Port Coquitlam mayor steps aside, apologizes
2007-04-13 14:37 CBC News | The embattled mayor of Port Coquitlam, B.C., has announced he is stepping down temporarily, following an incident at the home of his former girlfriend last week that led to his arrest.
Scott Young, 45, spent the Easter weekend in jail and faces a number of criminal charges in connection with an alleged assault at the woman's home.
Port Coquitlam Mayor Scott Young says he faces a 'day-to-day struggle' with alcoholism.
He was released three days ago on bail of $10,000.At his lawyer's office in downtown Vancouver Friday morning, Young formally announced he would temporarily surrender the mayor's chair.
Young, who has been the city's mayor since 2001, also apologized for his behaviour.
"Last week, I made a terrible mistake. An event occurred which was the sole responsibility of myself. To the persons affected by my conduct, I extend my most sincere and humble apology," he said.
"I know what I did was wrong, and I acknowledge that I acted entirely out of character."
One of the bail conditions was that Young refrain from alcohol and get alcoholism counselling.
"I am taking immediate steps to do what is necessary to come to grips with this problem, including any treatment that will help with my recovery," Young told reporters Friday.
"Given what I know about alcoholism, I recognize that this will be a day-to-day struggle."
Port Coquitlam's acting mayor has made it clear he thinks it would have been better for the suburban city if Young resigned. Michael Wright said Thursday that Young's legal problems are casting the city in a bad light. |
